Movie Review: Dawn of a New Day

I appreciated the movie because it reminded me about several management and economic concepts I’ve learned. Shizuo Kagaya was brilliant. People make so much money by establishing standards in their industry. It was very interesting to see how a technology that we are familiar with get its start. As a consumer we don’t realize that the products we own are outcomes of other people’s research, sacrifice, and hard work.

What I like most about the movie is that the main character was such a respectable person. His personality made him even more interesting. He wasn’t a college graduate but he was a great manager. The video department had suffered significant losses. Focusing his energy on the intangible assets of his department provided a new prospective that the managers and the workers needed. However, there were some instances that Kagaya’s actions seem to borderline fraud. He forecasted high sales projections without evidence and of course the “bribe”. I will admit, that was a really nice tie.

I’m a huge fan of sappy endings and this movie has to be somewhere on the top of that list. I can only hope that one day when I retire, my fellow coworkers would send me off with a giant human formation of the letters VHS.
