Most people probably wouldn't pick up this movie, Dawn of a New Day, if they saw it in blockbuster; however, this is movie is a pleasant surprise. It does a good job in hitting all marks for a great feel-good movie.
Heading an all star cast, Toshiyuki Nishida as Kagaya, leads his team in a race to construct the first video system for the home. The race quickly becomes a battle of David and Goliath. Electronics giant Sony beats all the major companies by releasing their Betamax machine. Underdog JVC struggles to develop a lighter, sleeker, longer recording unit. Not only do they have to do this, but they also have to get the rest of the companies on board. Blow after blow and defeat after defeat, the battle to win the world over pushes the limits of Kagaya, his team, his company, and his family.
Amazing acting from Toshiyuki Nishida, Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) propel the movie forward from what would otherwise be a boring movie. Emotion drives the movie to an 'B' movie and a happy ending secures the rating at a personal 3.5 out of 5 stars. The plot fails to grab my attention at first which would have left this movie undiscovered if I had not been required to watch it. In the end, I would recommend this movie to someone who has run out of movies to watch, but I wouldn't put the movie poster up in my room (if that makes any sense... I'm running out of juice here.)
